just curious how those with the amd 64 (2800-3200) are enjoying it? was thinking about getting my shuttle pc as an amd64 as the shuttle pc doesnt support over clockign and the better p4 chips for socet 476 were quite expensive

You overclockers spend too much time worrying about if your computer will be 2 seconds faster than mine, who cares about 2 seconds...Its not that big of a deal and you risk destroying your cpu.

in terms of having a pc for college i'd like to have one that would be able to stand the time. with my current OCing capabilities i dont think there'd be a big jump in terms of needs from my current speed of 3ghz and (oc from 2.4) and whatever is to come. but without it being able to OC from the 2.4 im worried that it would become outdated in the end.
the other consideration im taking in here is that if i wanted to upgrade in the future it'd be easier to upgrade the amd 64 as its a newer chip then it is the p4 476 for the fact that the socket 476 chips are getting mroe expensive and soem are even being taken off the market due to intel wishing to push their prescott cores. not having or wishing ot have a prescott core or anything having to do with them im stuck with the 476 or the amd 64.
oh and fyi, the p4 northwood out performed (by 2%) the amd64 2800, (which were in the same price category when amd 64 first came out)

I think this thread might be filled with naughty potty talk. Can somebody translate this for a Luddite?

if you don't plan on overclocking Athlon 64 939 will be your best bet....I've hear terrific overclocking capabilites with Athlon 64 754 using a DFI Lanparty UF3 but they are 5% slower (@ stock speeds). And since 939 3200+ and 754 3200+ are about the same price, go with 939. Also, 939 supports dual channels.

part of computer building is luck... Dooghan you might have gotten a chip that couldn't overlock much. Someone with a 3.6Ghz P4 overclocked to 6.0Ghz+ but that's with vapor cooling.

And obviously that isnt practical, you wouldnt bring your liquid nitrogen tank to the local lan party...
